Today a lot of music fans have a short attention span and in Hip-Hop that is especially true. Artist today are lucky to put out more than 2 albums. To be around and relevant for over 15 years is no easy task no matter what you are doing. That is why you have to respect Big Boi from Outkast. His first official solo album, “Sir Luscious Left foot: The Son of Chico Dusty” recently came out on July 6th. I had a chance to talk to Big Boi about various things including his new album. We talk about the types of music that inspires him (who woulda thought he listens to Sinead O’Connor) and of course about his partner in rhymed Andre 3000. Redhands: You got the new album what’s the full title? Big Boi: Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty Redhands: Where did that title come from? Big Boi: Luscious Left foot is just another name I been going by for a while. It’s about spreading funk throughout the universe. Son of Chico Dusty is also me it’s a nod to my father who was an air force pilot and a marine. He passed away a few years ago but he was a good guy. Redhands: Speaking of the funk, “For Yo Sorrows” features George Clinton. How did that song come together? Big Boi: I got the beat from organized noise took it to the studio and added my part. Then I called Uncle George cause I could hear him on it and he put his funky spin on it. Redhands: So you got George Clinton on speed dial? Big Boi: Yea we were just together last weekend in Florida. I got to stay close to the funk. Redhands: Then you got Shine Blockas with Gucci Mane who did that beat? Big Boi: It was done by our DJ Cut Master Flex who we been down with for over 10 years. He been DJing our shows forever and he had the beat and it sounded good. We don’t really like samples but I had to smash that sample. Gucci and I did another song a little bit ago and then I asked him you want to do this joint and he said hell yea. Redhands: These songs were out before the album. What was your plan like how did you actually pick a single because these records came out first? Big Boi: It was some label politics at first until I took my whole destiny in my hands. I had to leak out some records because the fans were waiting. Then I made my move to Def Jam and released a few more records. Redhands: I thought "For Yo Sorrows" easily could a been a single too. Big Boi: That is one of my favorite songs but I wanted to start fresh with a new single. Redhands: Did you do any beats on the album? Big Boi: The record "General Patton" was done by me and my production team. Organized Noise did some stuff; Andre 3000 did a beat with Yelawolf and me on it. I definitely had to do some beats on there too. Redhands: You just mentioned Yelawolf; I saw him perform and was hanging out with him a while back outside of Philly. That dude is all over the place how did your collaboration come about? Big Boi: His manager is a friend of mine I went to high school with him. Yelawolf used to come to the studio with him. We met up at Athens Georgia at a concert and I heard his music and I was digging it. Redhands: The manager you’re talking about is Bear right? Big Boi: Exactly. Redhands: Yea Yelawolf got a great team around him and has the star quality. His music is crazy too he can rap his ass off I think he will definitely be a star. Big Boi: Yea his music is real dope and he got the star quality. He has something to say and he’s going to be big. Redhands: So Andre 3000 did the beat on that is he rapping on your album too? Big Boi: Na we had some label politics so I couldn’t clear him on the album. Redhands: So SpeakerBoxxx was technically an Outkast album but it was kind of a solo album for you’re as well. What separates that album from this new one? Big Boi: This is just a continuation of all the good music and funk Outkast has been putting out. I am always looking for new sounds and grooves and the fans won’t be disappointed in this album. Redhands: I am curious what type of music is on your Ipod besides Hip Hop? Big Boi: Neil Young, a lot of Bob Marley, Sinead O’Connor, Metallica, Steely Dan man I listen to everything. I hardly ever really listen to Hip-Hop actually. Redhands: I figured you wouldn’t listen to Hip-Hop as much as other types. It is easy to tell you’re influenced by everything. How did you get put on to some of this stuff? Big Boi: Started when I was young my Uncle and my Grandmother put me on. My grandmother would clean the house and listen to Bob Marley. I never discriminate against music if its dope its dope. A lot of people put themselves in a box with listening to one type of music. Redhands: Is there anyone dead or alive you wish you could collaborate with? Big Boi: I want to work with K-Bush who is a vocal artist from the U.K. Redhands: I guess you just put me onto something I have to check her out. We talked about Yelawolf is there any other new rappers you are listening to or you think have potential? Big Boi: I like B.O.B a lot. Redhands: Speaking of B.O.B I used to intern at Atlantic when he first got signed. People were saying he was Andre 3000’s protégé is that true? Big Boi: No they don’t even know each other there’s a lot of lies in this industry. I am not saying it was B.O.B or his camp that said it but you know how it goes. Redhands: What is the craziest lie you heard about yourself? Big Boi: Probably that Dre wrote my rhymes. Redhands: I never heard that one and I wouldn’t believe it either. On facebook I had people send me some questions to ask you. Of course someone asked me to ask what’s up with Andre 3000 is he working on any music? Big Boi: He is working on a solo record I talked to him a few days ago. There isn’t a release date or anything yet. Redhands: So the album is out now what should we expect?Big Boi: We got a lot of special treats and I worked hard on it and the fans will like it. Redhands: Any last words? Big Boi: The album is a funky ride and I have been working on it for a few years. It is another Outkast journey and if you are a fan of our music you’ll love this record. |
