Artist Insight:  True Way of Getting Your Message to the Masses

What’s going on everybody?  This is your favorite marketing guru, Shod Harris (not really a guru, but im pretty good at it lol).  I’ve been meaning to write this new blog for the past couple of weeks but life has been real hectic with the start of my new blog site, www.shodharris.blogspot.com, and the release of the latest edition of The Tastemakers Series mixtape, regular life stuff and making sure everyone knows who Thadd Williams is (shameless plug lol).  Since I started Undergroundfuzion.com last year, I’ve started to receive a lot of emails on a daily basis from artists who want to get their music heard.  Some of those emails are sent the right way and some are sent the wrong way, very wrong.  With my site I try to help indie talent that are trying to grow their buzz, but when they send emails that are just completely jacked up, there is really nothing I can do to help them.  Artists, managers and whoever is sending these emails really don’t have a clue of what they are doing to reach bloggers, DJs, and whoever else they are sending emails to who are remotely important in the music industry.

This is something real quick that will help these artists out with sending emails.  First, there should be a different email sent to DJs and Sites (especially blogs).  When sending music to DJs, you should only just send them the mp3 of your track.  Make sure that the track is coded right with the artist name and title of the track.  This helps them know who they are listening too, and if they are going to add it to their sets, it’s easier for them to find the track.  I’ve seen DJs straight delete the tracks if they aren’t coded the right way.  It definitely doesn’t hurt to send a photo shoot pic of your self or if the track is from a mixtape or album, send the cover.

When you send your music to blogs and other music sites, that’s a completely different monster in itself.  If people don’t know, bloggers that have major sites are very arrogant and they feel they are bigger than what they are.  That’s just the truth and they almost have a right to be that way.  So when you come to them, you have to make sure you come correct.  You have to think that they probably receive thousands of emails a day, so what about your email is going to make them want to open it, let alone post your music to their site.  Bloggers are also pretty lazy so you will pretty much need to lay everything out for them.  Don’t send them the mp3; make sure you send them the links.  Most definitely send them some type of high quality graphic.  Not a picture that you took on your camera phone in the bathroom or a picture of you at your family reunion.  If there is anything special about the record or album that you can write about, put that in there as well.  If you are going to be writing anything, please make sure you hit the spell-check.  When you are sending mixtapes, make sure you give the name of the project (I know it sounds remedial but there are a lot of people that don’t do this), attach the cover art to the email, send the track list, and of course the download link.  If they have to download something to get all that info more than likely they won’t, I'm just saying.  My site isn’t even that big yet and I won’t go through all of that.   A lot of the bloggers will usually just copy and paste that into the site.  There are even some artists and djs that will send you an email just with the coding to be able to post their project, so all the blogger has to do is just copy and paste that code (I love those people, Shout out to Coalmine Records and J. Green Moneytalkz lol).  That way just makes things a lot easier and it shows that they are appreciative of your time.

Also if you haven’t received any response from the people that you have sent emails too, try to send them an email first to introduce your self and let them know what you do.  They might be more receptive to posting your latest mixtape or single.  Just a thought.  These are just some suggestions that will help get your music some extra placements.  If you don’t believe me just ask the sites that have posted my client’s work to their sites.

Trust Me It Works!!
