| Industry Advice Wednesday: A Solution to the Death of Album Sales | |

In a day and age where album sales are dying except for a select few, the industry seems to be just accepting it and looking at it as a problem instead of thinking of it as a situation that’s need to be solved. In a world where we have the internet, and everyone has a computer, you’d think people grasp the concept of giving music away for free. As Q The Question once said, “That’s the way to get your music heard” so with that in mind you’d think labels would just let the people download the albums free. This is where you’re thinking “They have mixtapes”, or “How would artist get money”, well keep reading and you’ll see where I’m going with this. Think of the whole concept of record stores dying out, and physical albums only being shipped to homes through sites like Amazon.com and Itunes.com. It will be a shocker, as well as a death to a whole part of the business, but it’s the birth to a whole new business as well. Now think of albums being given away for free, and for each download a company that sponsors the album, pays the artist/label 99 cents on behalf of the people. If it’s more than one company, then companies come together to pay the artist 99 cents per download, so say there are 9 companies, each company only chips in 9 cents per download adding together to 99 cents. Companies would have their advertisement on the album somewhat like a mixtape drop, and also have their logo on the cover. This way the people get the music free, and the companies pay to have their voices heard. The idea may be controversial, also it may be outrageous, but it is a solution that can become a win/win situation. As with many ideas there are pro’s and con’s to this solution. One con will be that the album will feel too commercial, especially if more than one company is sponsoring the project. Also there is a fear that companies will start to control the music that each artists makes, which only cheats us as fans, and us as artists as well. The pro’s however is that album leaking will go down, if you think about it when’s the last time you heard a mixtape leak? That’s because since it’s free there’s no need to leak it just to not buy it. Also artist will get paid more, and if you count each download like a sale, then the status of an artist going gold, platinum, & diamond would still apply & count.
This is just an idea to save what we now have to call a music industry. I make music, I live music, and I love music, but despite popular belief there is no getting your music heard if there is no music industry. Every artist no matter where they are in there career wants to be a part of the industry or is a part of the industry whether major or independent. If the labels go, then that’s one thing, but if the industry goes, we all suffer. There’s no point in making beautiful music if there is nobody to hear it. Ideas solve problems, not pointing out the obvious and complaining.

I dont know everything about the industry. I just know more than you. Sorry to disappoint you but youre not my father. My father is intelligent. Youre a stoned idiot that barely knows how to use punctuation. Grow up man. Seriously. I wasnt trying to hurt your feelings by shooting the idea down. I was just giving my opinion. Theres still holes in the theory but its not really worth discussing any longer.
As I said before I do appreciate the fact that people are putting forth the effort to try and solve this problem. With open discussion like this it will get figured out sooner or later.
Like I said before, the thought is good but its not gonna hold water when put top the test. It doesnt even seem like a good deal for the companies that are supposed to pay for the ads on the cd, which is a dying medium anyhow. Quit smoking blunts, read a book and do your research before you call someone else a fool next time.
They'll get reinbursed the same way...if you know everything about the industry you wouldn't be here debatin your father
You shouldnt call other people fools when you sound so ridiculous. Clearly you know less than nothing about the music industry. In most cases the engineers, studio musicians, and studios get paid by the label when it is a major label. The label then reimburses themselves from album sales. The artist is ultimately responsible for paying for the aforementioned necessities. Its basically a loan from the record company.

The same way they always will...the only difference is instead of the people paying for the album companies are...read it more clearly fool. And if I were an artist I wouldnt mind if the check is bigger.
I think its a dope idea stop hatin....Think of it as settling for more commercials but not having to pay for cable, you loose but you win.
