NBA Playoff Western Conference 1st Rd. Predictions
Written by Quinton Hatfield    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 19:03

The west is the more competitive conference in the NBA this year. While in the east coast you can make the playoffs winning just about forty games, if you play for a western team the minimum amount of games to be won has to be at least fifty. This conference has the power and strength in the NBA and some good series will be televised. Blazers VS Suns, Denver VS Utah, the Texas shootout once again with the Mavs and the Spurs, nailbiters are set to take place. Let's not forget about Kobe and the Lakers who want to repeat as champs. Now here is the breakdown of the Western Conference first round playoff picture.

(1) Los Angeles Lakers VS (8) Oklahoma Thunder

Whether you admit it or not the Los Angeles Lakers finished at the top of the western conference. Many would analyst would make arguments that the team is vunerable which will be exposed in the playoffs. Speaking frankly, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers get the job done when it counts and if you can't see that you as a basketball fan have a problem. Pau Gasol has been playing at a superb level to go along with the great chemistry with Lamar Odom. Even when you talk about size Andrew Bynum will continue to clog up the lanes not allowing easy layups forcing teams to constantly shoot the ball. That doesn't even include the shutdown defensive play of Ron Artest. Shannon Brown can be pretty good coming off the bench with high flying dunks and Derek Fisher at point guard is always deadly with those killer three pointers.

When you talk about the Oklahoma Thunder its only right the mention the 6'9 forward Kevin Durant. The kid is an animal and much respect to being the youngest player in NBA history to win the scoring title. With the amazing play from Durant all year as a scoring machine lead Oklahoma to a playoff birth and this team will compete in the future with a few weapons added. Russell Westbrook is a very well round playing guard and deserves to be compliment for his assistance to Kevin Durant making him the player that he is.

Prediction: Lakers in 6. For the most part Oklahoma are a young team making their first playoff birth. Give credit when its due for the fact they still managed to grab the 8th seed in a Western Conference that is highly competitive and tougher than the Eastern Conference. Kevin Durant game is tight, but its not enough to take out Kobe and the Lakers. The Thunder beating the Lakers four times to eliminate them just won't happen.

(2) Dallas Mavericks VS (7) San Antonio Spurs

The Dallas Mavericks have been on fire the second half of the season. The addition of Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood from the Wizards turned Dallas around to be scary team in the Western Conference. In all actuality this move for Dallas have many to think their better than Denver to compete with the Lakers for a run to the NBA Finals. Dirk Nowitzki can't be stopped and its nothing you can do about it. Jason Terry's playmaking ability has went through the roof and after the Lakers, you can put the Mavs as the second best in the west.

The Spurs play in the late season has been great and Manu Ginobili is a big part of that. With the injury to Tony Parker the Spurs offense were motivated to not be pushed around in the west. Tim Duncan while aging is still one of the best ever at power forward/center and bringing in some youth with Richard Jefferson helped the Spurs get a little younger. The bench is pretty decent with Dejaun Blair, Roger Mason, and Antonio McDyess who all play reasonable minutes to make sure the Spurs core big three (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili)get rest for nailbiters at the end.

Prediction: Mavs in 6. The Spurs are very similiar to the Boston Celtics. A big three who are future hall of famers, that's very experienced, but aging (Duncan and Ginobili). The Dallas Mavericks play a fast paced game with a lot of speed and the problem will be easily shown with San Antonio struggling to keep up, especially on the fast breaks. This Texas shootout classic will be  fun, but the Mavs will prevail in this duel.

(3) Phoenix Suns VS (6) Portland Trailblazers

Phoenix are truthfully a much better team than the previous year. Over the last few years Phoenix has built a name around the NBA as one of the most dynamic run and gun offenses. Veteran guard Steve Nash, also a two time MVP is the oldest player in NBA history to win an assist title. This alone shows the Nash has no signs of slowing down and still can get the job done. Grant Hill is having a remarkable year playing to his full potential, and we all know where this guy was at one point in his career with the constant ankle injuries that put a hamper on his career. Amare Stoudemare is a wrecking machine and will jam on you any second as he's like a ticking time bomb. Not only that Channing Frye will be open to stroke down those three pointers like its nothing.

The Blazers the same can be said for them taking a step up this year to turn it up. The youth on this team is amazing and adding veteran guard Andre Miller from Philadelphia to the roster was a plus. Brandon Roy once again had an all-star year while fighting through a lot of injuries. LaMarcus Alridge is a a monster on the inside and gives Portland the size needed to matchup with the west's big men. Overall while Portland needs some things to make them stronger, head coach Nate McMillan has these boys on the right track to be a face in the NBA in years to come.

Prediction: Phoenix in 7. Experience is something that can't be taught which is something the Phoenix Suns have over Portland. Phoenix has been competing in the playoffs year after year for almost the last decade. Portland on the other hand has youth which is great, but when your young you need time to live and learn. Steve Nash, Stoudemare, Grant Hill, Jason Richardson, been there and done that. This alone will cause mental mistakes versus Portland as the teams experience in the playoffs have been short lived. Last year was the first time the Blazers been to the postseson in about five years if I'm correct. Brandon Roy's game will get better and LaMarcus Alridge skill level as a big man only improves. Portland in the future has potential, but for the time being Phoenix wins this round.

(4) Denver Nuggets VS (5) Utah Jazz

Denver this year alone has made much improvement to be one of the NBA's elite. Carmelo Anthony has been a powerhouse all year elevating his game to the next level to display his championship hunger. Chauncey Billups continues to exemplify his leadership role putting the team in the right direction in order to stay competive. Coach George Karl is a players coach and this lives up to show when the team loves its coach games will be won.

Utah when you look at the all around roster the talent this team have is very good. Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, Andrew Kirlenko, Millisap, all have carry a great game that shows Utah will be good for a very long time. Jerry Sloan only recruits the best proving he has a keen eye for basketball talent at the highest level. There are times when Utah can be inconsistent, but with growth and maturity the Jazz will only strive to the top as time goes on.

Prediction: Nuggets in 7. This game will be a fight from start to finish. Looking at the even matchups, Boozer VS Carmelo, Deron VS Chauncey, both teams will steal wins on the home teams court. Both teams have outside scoring threats and carry a bench that can get on fire once the kitchen starts to heat up. Denver gives you J.R. Smith who will not be afraid to shoot and the defensive skills from Chris Anderson will make things tough on Utah. Utah down the line just will not execute the big plays like Denver, even though you can picture Kyle Korver knocking down some big ones for Utah in close games. Denver will advance the the next round, but it won't be easy.

I have been running the free version of AVG for years but it has been causing problems with Internet Explorer 8. I solved it by replacing my AVG with BT Net Protect but now my father is having the same problem and his ISP doesn't provide any security software. I want to uninstall AVG from his PC but I'm not sure what to replace it with. Does anyone have any experience of other free anti-virus software that they can recommend? Many thanks.
