| What NBA Dunk Contest? | |

I want my 20 minutes back and I want them back now!!! I can’t believe I had to sit through an awful NBA Slam Dunk Contest this past weekend. When I heard TNT analyst Kenny Smith say that Nate Robinson, DeMar DeRozan, Shannon Brown, and Gerald Wallace was shooting jumpers and talking to celebrities during the shootaround, I had a bad feeling this was going to be an awful event. Nate might have won his third dunk contest, an NBA record, but let’s be honest it was by default. I never thought I would ever see a dunk contest with just no energy from fans, judges, celebrities, and NBA players. I blame the so-called chosen one LeBron James. LeBron said he was going to enter the dunk contest but he didn’t. I guarantee you if he was in this contest, we would have seen Dwight Howard. It would of been a dunk contest we will remember, but not on a Micheal Jordan against Dominique Wilkins status. There’s only two things that work in dunk contests, popular all-stars and short basketball players. We did get a midget playing in this event, but no marquee players. I’ll be honest I thought I was going to see a show in the finals between Nate Robinson and DeMar DeRozan. Yes I saw some dunks but I didn’t see anything exciting. DeMar’s dunk with an assist from Sonny Weems was the best dunk of the event. I enjoyed Sonny throwing the ball to the side of the backboard and DeMar caught it and did a windmill. Nate had a nice dunk when he threw it off the background then a nice behind the back jam but what else did we get from that contest besides that nothing. Nate was happy to get his third trophy but he decided to retire from contest. He competed in four dunk contests, at least he has done his part. Let me please talk about how disappointed I am with Lakers Shannon Brown, who was eliminated in the first round. Here’s a man that the whole world was ready to see. I was anticipating a great show from Shannon but all he did was some of the same stuff I see from him in an NBA game. I was not impressed with Kobe Bryant throwing up an alley-oop pass to him for a jam. The problem is, it’s something that I know I would see from him an a game. It was like watching a comedian suck on stage. You think you’ll be entertained but you get cheated out of your money. Don’t even get me started with Bobcats Gerald Wallace, who was also eliminated in the first round. Yes he’s an NBA all-star who participated in the contest, but not the star we wanted to see. I’m not sure why he thought his average dunks was going to get him anywhere. I’m glad he played in the NBA All-Star game or else this would have been a bad weekend for him. The dunk contest determines the whole All-Star Skills Competition and this year I wish I had never waist my time. I wish tickets weren’t sold out for Mike Epps and Bruce Bruce comedy show in Richmond, Virginia that same night. It would have been a lot better then what I sat and watched at home. I don’t want to panic just yet and beg the NBA to do something in like in 2002 when they had a wheel to determine the players dunks, that was the worst thing ever. I hope this event will be better next year, otherwise the league will fine a way to ruin this contest again. |
