Every so often we hear of an artist looking to put their relatively obscure city on the map. Being the capitol of Pennsylvania, I don’t think we can call Harrisburg obscure but in the hip hop world it is. Here enters J. Monday, an emerging artist from the city whose music combines elements of hip hop’s old and new.If you haven’t heard any of Monday’s recent leaks, we suggest you run a quick Google search of his music because The Capital Kid is spewing a lot of heat. His wordplay and storytelling skills are as good as anyone out holding a mic. Monday is paving his own lane and as more fans get familiar with his music anticipation is slowly building around the release of his mixtape The Sequel this summer. Q the Question recently chopped it up with The Capital Kid to grasp who he is and what he represents through his music. You’ve gotten this far so check out our Q&A as J. Monday talks about his city, music and even sports allegiances. QtheQuestion: How's everything going Monday? Tell the people who you are and where you are from. J. Monday: I’m from Harrisburg, Pa - the capital of Pennsylvania but it ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at. I go by J because that’s the initial to my name which came before the music shit. Monday was something else, buy "The Capital Kid" is my handle [laughs]. I’m a new artist but my music is hot - check me! QtheQuestion: You've probably been asked the following question a hundred times already in different ways, but what's Harrisburg's Hip-Hop scene like? J. Monday: Shit if you ask me. Right now I would say I’m it, but honestly they’re a lot of artists here, some better than others, but underground-wise there are a lot of artist on their grind here. QtheQuestion: How does Harrisburg differ from Philadelphia in terms of rap style and swagger? J. Monday: If this makes any sense, they’re a lot alike but way different. The styles are somewhat similar but the slang is different. I don’t think I sound like I’m from Philly but some people ask me that. Maybe it depends on the person like I said earlier – it’s not where you’re from its where you’re at. Philly has a musical identity already and I’m creating something like that for Harrisburg as we speak - ya dig me. QtheQuestion: You've released a series of leaks that have some major websites and Hip-Hop heads anticipating your next moves. That said, what is your next move? Any projects lined up for the spring/summer? J. Monday: I have The Sequel dropping in the summer; June or July-ish. As of my next move, I’m doing shows right now. I’m actually on the west coast right now for a show, but besides that I’m doing features on other artists’ mixtapes so I have my hands in a couple projects. QtheQuestion: On of the tracks you leaked called "My Life" you give fans a piece of who you are and where you've been - a personal testimony as you said. Is this a formula we can expect to hear from J. Monday? J. Monday: Man when I get in front of that mic I just want to stay true to myself first and foremost. The fans will catch on. In my opinion music is lacking that real sound. When I say real sound I mean you can hear it in my voice the pain, the happiness, the grind! That’s all I’m planning to give; my personal testimony. I don’t want to say too much but I’m a keep feeding them. QtheQuestion: What do you want people to take away from your music? J. Monday: I want to raise awareness - everything ain’t about money, cash, and hoes. I want to change a person’s mood. I want to raise your dopamine levels [laughs]. I want the fans to feel like they know me. This is my live not someone else. QtheQuestion: Now aside from music, we know Pennsylvania is big on sports. Who do you normally rout for, Pittsburgh teams or Philadelphia teams? J. Monday: Man, I like the Penguins and the Phillies, but I hate the Steelers and the Eagles [laughs]. Football-wise I’m a Redskins’ fan because the used to hold their pre-camp practices about 20-miles from Harrisburg. McNabb is in town this year so I have high expectations. QtheQuestion: What is your favorite sport? Are you talented in any? Is your cross-over better than your football hands? J. Monday: Both I’m pretty good! I had a couple of scholarship offers to play basketball and my crossover is nice [laughs]. I also played baseball so I’m pretty athletic. QtheQuestion: Where can the people find you? J. Monday: Shit man all over if you’re looking for J. Monday music - just Google me. You can find me on Twitter too @thecapitalkid. Also since we are talking sports see me online I’m a Madden-head. My ps3 name is “J Monday” – holla at me! QtheQuestion: Leave the readers with some final words. J. Monday: Holla at me. J. Monday – real life and true stories. |
