Walter McFadden a 5th round cornerback out of Auburn is a part of an impressive defensive rookie class for the Oakland Raiders that includes former All-American Rolando McClain from Alabama and Lamarr Houston out of Texas. The Raiders who have struggled the past few seasons may have found a gem in McFadden who has quickly earned the respect of his peers. “He doesn’t seem like he would be scare of the big moment” said second year wide receiver Louis Murphy, a former opponent in college of McFadden from Florida. Also, McFadden gets to learn the position from possibly the best defensive back in the game Nnamdi Asomugha. QtheQuestion.com talks with Walter about his fellow rookies, Asomugha, and much more. QtheQuestion.com: Can you describe the feeling that you had when learned that you had been drafted by the Raiders? WF: Aww man the feeling that I had, I feel very, very blessed. Through all the hard work through college and training for the NFL and just showing off my talents that God gave me. God blessed me with the opportunity to play in the NFL. It’s just like a big relief because it’s always a dream come true for me. QtheQuestion.com: I read that you did not participate in the scouting combine, were you not invited or was there a conflicted with your schedule? WF: It was a lot more than that coming up to the situation, something about first not getting invited and then being invited. Then it kind of set in my head to I guess to go with the worst possible outcome so by the time I got the invitation it was little bit to late so we just came up with the idea to just let it go and we’ll do everything at pro day. QtheQuestion.com: How has Bryant McFadden (Walter’s cousin) helped you prepare to play in the NFL? WF: Just watching him play before I was in the NFL, seeing the things that he was doing. You know he calls me every day saying just to keep your head right, keep working, you’ve been playing football all your life ain’t nothing going to change. He keeps me humble, he keeps my mind focused and he keeps with the book of God and I think that kind helps me out with a lot of things. QtheQuestion.com: Playing with the Raiders you will be playing along side one of the best cornerbacks in the league Nnamdi Asomugha. I’m not sure you’ve heard this quote “He’s the coolest, calmest, poised rookie we have. He’ll come in make a play like; OK I’ve been here before. It seems like he never gets rattled”. So what’s it like playing next to him and to have him say that about you? WF: Aww man I tell you I don’t even know what words to say now, I look up to this guy so much and I watch him even when were not playing football. I watch this guy just walk around basically like stalking him. Even today he’s just a big role model to me and if I can hear him say something right back to you, it’s a great privilege to have those words come out of his mouth and say those good things. I think I’m doing pretty good impressing him but I’m just so shocked about everything he does on and off the field. QtheQuestion.com: What about the rest of the defensive rookies they drafted Rolando McClain, yourself, and Lamarr Houston what are the expectations you have for you and your fellow rookies? WF: We all agreed to come in and just help the team in anyway we can, you know we all just feel blessed to be here. We could’ve been somewhere else but once all of us got to know each other we all just figured that we could help change the team around and give of us a better shot of trying to get to the playoffs and the Super Bowl. So that’s our goal to do what it takes to win. QtheQuestion.com: What about your defense as a whole with Richard Seymour, the cornerback Asomugha, what is your expectation for the defense has a whole because they have been doing pretty well the last few years? WF: Just keeping it going strong you got Richard Seymour and like you said Nnamdi who are doing things to push the defense to do better than before, make more plays, get more takeaways. We figure our offense will be a lot better especially from last year. We figure if our defense is straight our offense won’t have any problems against any other defense that comes in front of them. QtheQuestion: What can you tell us about your head coach Tom Cable, he’s pretty low key, and not well known so what could you tell us about him? WF: I can tell you he’s a coach that you can go to talk about anything, about problems; this is not just a business for him. He really wants us to grasp and get the whole thing about being a team, understanding one another and being friends through out. The whole year just getting along and being a family. I can see him changing the whole organization around by just making us a big family and like I said he’s a guy you can talk to about anything and he will be there for you. QtheQuestion.com: Walter have you met Al Davis? WF: Yes sir. QtheQuestion.com: What was that like? WF: When I was first drafted they sent me a book called “Commitment to Excellence”. I read the book with Al Davis all in it and my first time meeting him was just like wow this is the guy that help the Raiders to be the team that they are. Just by speaking with him for a few minutes it was just like this guy is a legend for the Oakland Raiders and he will never be forgotten, so I was kind of overwhelmed meeting him and then the great things that he had to say and all the things that he expects from me, so it was overwhelming. QtheQuestion.com: Now since you’re in training camp and you are a rookie so I’m sure you’ve had an embarrassing moment or a welcome to the NFL moment? WF: Yeah, they getting me with a couple of things right now. Just recently I had my haircut. QtheQuestion.com: You get that Tebow haircut? WF: No I didn’t get the “Tebow” but I got the “Mr. T” with some letters in the front of my head and spots so you know it’s pretty bad (laughs). QtheQuestion.com: Recently you played in your first NFL game (against the Cowboys), could you talk about that experience? WF: My family grew up Dallas Cowboys fans and that’s almost like America’s favorite team especially when they had Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders and all those great guys back then. That’s all I knew growing up so by me being able to play against the Dallas Cowboys was a big thing. Plus, by playing in their new stadium was kind of shock so when I got in the game at the end of the 1st quarter and played the rest of the game it was like wow wow wow that’s Tony Romo wow wow that’s Roy Williams. But after a few snaps it was like now it’s Walter McFadden, I’m out here and I got to make a name for myself and I got to help my team win and I know the other 10 guys is counting on me as well. QtheQuestion.com: What are the expectations for you and the Raiders this season? WF: We want to get to the Super Bowl, so we going to take it one game.
