The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for change in this up and coming 2010 season. Finishing last year at a disappointing 4-12 the Chiefs organization now this season are making sure the team improves for the long haul. In the previous 2009 season changes were made in order to better the team that will soon impress the fans at Arrowhead Stadium. For one newly appointed Coach Todd Haley is now in his second year and will have less stress due to some recent changes. The coaching staff made some major adjustments hiring some former champions to relieve him of many duties that overwhelmed him the previous year. The Chiefs brought in Charlie Weiss as the new offensive coordinator and Romeo Crennel to coordinate the defense. From the way it looks the Chiefs seem as though they want to bring in that former New England Patriots formula that dominated the 2000’s. That’s the reason these two men were huge acquisitions to this team. Teams are not meant to be bad forever and the Kansas City Chiefs understand that very well. Coach Todd Haley is heading into his second year along with quarterback Matt Cassell as the starter. The Chiefs also landed a solid running back acquiring Thomas Jones from the Jets. Though they play in the very competitive AFC on any given Sunday in the National Football League anything can happen. Speaking via telephone for www.QtheQuestion.com a conversation with Chiefs linebacker Corey Mays recently took place. Heading into his second year with the Chiefs Corey happens to be very exuberant for the coming season. Having a relationship with offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss from their days at Notre Dame, Corey knows the right moves are being made. In this exclusive interview many questions were asked and from the way it sounds the Chiefs are ready. Is the team really confident in Matt Cassell, can they compete in the AFC West, what about the addition of Thomas Jones? Corey explains it all with no hesitation. QH: I’m here with Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Corey Mays, how it feels to be getting done on www.QtheQuestion.com? CM: It feels good to be here. I know we are thousands of miles away but it’s good to be there (laughs). QH: Not trying to be funny but the Chiefs did have a terrible season last year. The team finished at 4-12, so I have to ask what will be done this year for the team to be improve? CM: Really you just have to look at last year and put the season behind you. At the same time you have to look at the mistakes and build upon it. There were a lot of different things we could've done last year but it will be a lot of different things we will do this year. QH: Some new changes have been made with the coaching staff. Break down the new adjustments which will take the team to the next level? CM: We hired Charlie Weiss as our new offensive coordinator and Romeo Crennel as the new defensive coordinator. It’s going to be on new on offensive and defensive. Both sides of the ball are really excited on what will be coming this season. QH: How you feel about the move head coach Todd Haley has made bringing in Charlie Weiss as the new offensive coordinator? CM: Well now Todd Haley doesn’t have to focus on being a head coach and running the offense. Now he can completely focus on being the coach. This is great and I’m excited about it. My last year in college at Notre Dame was Charlie’s first year. We have a great relationship so I know guys are going to get coached the way they need to be coached. We have a lot of young players that are hungry. The great thing about it is that they are hungry and want to play. QH: I’ve spoke with some die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fans via twitter and let them know we would be talking. I offered a chance for them to ask some questions for me to as well for you to answer. One fan would like to know how you feel about Matt Cassell at quarterback this year? CM: I feel good about it and we all are going to back him up. He’s in a good system and he’s going to shine. I can’t personally make predictions but the team will be backing him up 100%. I’m very excited for this year. We brought in Thomas Jones who is a work horse and I’m excited about him too. QH: The AFC West can be surprising this year. The Chiefs are a young team on the rise, the Broncos made adjustments as well. The Chargers are always competitive and the Raiders are rebuilding. What's your take on the division this year? CM: That's one of the things is you can't focus too much on the moves that other teams make. Bottom line is you want to win and you can't take your focus away from what your team does. Every year in the NFL in every division all teams make major moves to make their organization better. Don't get me wrong the division is tough and winning it is a challenge. In order to win the division takes focus and that's what we are doing to remain competitive in the AFC West.
QH: The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Chances are when a team is very young the experience of struggle happens due to your fresh blood in the NFL. With the rough years faced already how you remain confident that it’s soon to change?
CM: You think like that and every time you come out you have to have a winning attitude. When you as a player come off a bad season the team is looking to evaluate. I equate the NFL to a reality show and everyday is an elimination day. This is the business of what have you done for me lately? You can't get too high and too low of yourself you have to stay steady and focused. The one day you’re too arrogant you can come out and have some bad plays. At the end of the day you have to come prepared every day.
QH: Kansas City is one of the smaller markets especially compared to New York, Chicago, and Dallas. How does it feel to come out on the field ready to play at Arrowhead Stadium?
CM: I love the fans, the fans are always supportive. Through the whole season they were passionate through the ups and downs. The Chiefs fans are always positive. They are waiting for a winning season and yes we want to make them happy. Fans are very passionate about this sport. When a person team wins it makes them very happy. It makes their work week better and much more. The overall city is much more positive. I'm extremely hype about us winning this year and I'll do whatever it takes.
QH: Jumping back to Charlie Weiss, how it feels that a former coach of yours from the collegiate level is now back on the pro level?
CM: It funny because he seen me grow through the years. I'm not a college student anymore and it’s good for him to see me grow as a player and person. I know he's a good coach. He's moved on from Notre Dame and now he's a part of Kansas City. Coach Haley is a good guy as well and he's ready to win. With the attitude those guys have, it’s good for our team and I can respect it.
QH: Another Chiefs fans via the twitter responses asked me to ask you how will you improve the defense overall?
CM: (Laughs) As a linebacker I'll be doing my job with collecting tackles and sacks. They just have to wait and see what we bring. I think I bring my passion to the field and my ability for willing to work. Speed and hitting is only part of it but it other things you have to do as well. To all the Chiefs fans we are going to show up every day Sunday.
QH: Do you look forward to hitting Philip Rivers this year?
CM: (Laughs) Let me just say I look forward to playing San Diego and every other team.
QH: Switching things up www.QtheQuestion.com as you know covers sports and hip-hop. Before game day what are some of Corey Mays favorite anthems to get him ready?
CM: T.I., Lil Wayne, Drake I like everything. Tupac, a little Beanie Sigel, I like a lot. Drake's "Thank Me Later" is pretty good too. Some good music is coming this summer from The Game, Jeezy, Rick Ross so I'm waiting. |
