Just now releasing his debut album “31 Minutes to Takeoff”, new comer Mike Posner has been on a consistent grind the past year. With the popular mixtape “A Matter of Time” with Don Cannon that built his following, Posner is now ready to show what he’s about with a major label release. The Billboard charting single “Cooler Than Me” was surprising to many. For that alone which is why Mr. Posner titled his new album “31 Minutes to Takeoff”. Mike Posner claims that the listener will be in a higher place after hearing the album, but was it worth the ride? From the start the sound of the album is pop but at the same time offers a blend of smooth R&B. Taking a listen to a record like “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” provides a good example. The substance of this song seems to offer a tale on getting a girl you feel in love with. Throughout the song the words sung by Posner are not bad but his voice needs work. Quite frankly this record was ok for the fact the production carried Posner. It makes you think it the record was sung by a more stellar artist (Justin Timberlake, Trey Songz, R. Kelly) it would be a smash. Going into much further listen to a record like “Delta 1406” carries some potential. Of course it’s great for each artist to offer a life story on their backround and their rise to fame. This song is definitely one of those were you can relax and ponder about your personal life with the ups and downs that came with it. But once again the production is good to put your mind in a state of relax mode but Pos’s voice just doesn’t cut it. Mike Posner you can say he deserves credit for willing to find a route his with his own sound. The production just draws so much discussion about “31 Minutes to Takeoff”. Honestly a lot of the beats sound like stuff that can come from a Super Mario Bros video game. Not saying that’s good or bad, just something new and the vocals from Posner I’m sorry are just not there. The album slightly gains interest with “Falling”. It gives off the feel of a relationship gone badly and the difficulties of moving on. The album is real personal and it exemplifies Posner’s life with woman. “Cheated” is one where it seems like Posner wifed up a chick that did him wrong. He regrets not doing her wrong and should’ve cheated too because he seems angry for playing a fool. Hey Mike, what they say? Don’t turn a hoe into a housewife! “Gone in September” is a recall of meeting a girl he just wanted a temporary fling with and ended falling in love. The funny thing is the song switches up and then it seems Mike turns the opposite on the following verse. Overall “Gone in September” does have potential to be a catch radio record. Giving sometime to “Save Your Goodbye” and “Synthesizer” dominate with the synthesizer instrument. For the fact you once again don’t favor Posner’s voice is why these records are above average. Closing things up “31 Minutes to Takeoff” was supposed to take listeners on a high level. Final conclusion in regards to Mike Posner’s music, the ride wasn’t so special. Not saying Posner won’t progress but in order to do so some areas have to improve and it starts with that voice. |
