Paul Wall-Heart of a Champion

In the digital age where buying albums has become a rare choice of action, producing fresh content is a must. While Paul Wall has established himself as one of Houston's top spitters, he hasn't maintained the hype that pursued him when he made his debut. With that said, Heart of a Champion doesn't disappoint, however it doesn't leave the impression necessary for him to make the comeback he hoped for.

The album has it's highs and lows. For example, Chamillionaire's hook on “Round Here” make's an outdated contribution to the song, while “Not My Friend” adds no value whatsoever to the entirety of Heart of a Champion. Highlights on the record include cuts such as “Smoke Everyday,” “Im'ma Get It,” and the jazzy sounds of “Live It.” While Paul's topics can become tiring, his play on words such as “My pocket's like Oprah, on holidays they chubby,” offer a fresh spin to the common place subject matters.

A slew of features throughout the album include Chamillionaire, Bun B, Kid Sister, Devin The Dude, Raekwon and Interscope's newcomer Yelawolf. Some guest verses could have been done without however. Paul attempts to give some shine to to lesser names, but unfortunately he does so at the expense of his own album. This is proven true especially on “Not My Friend,” where a weak flow makes the song a skipable track.

While it may not be on your top ten, this is the type of record you might find bumping in your on a hot summer. It may not gain the recognition that Paul Wall was looking for, but it falls among a standard that will keep his loyal fans in tact.
