Meet Bertell, the latest signee to Capitol Records as the label looks to build a brand with R&B adding this stellar new artist to their roster. Bertell when you listen to his story and his goals, all he ask is for a chance to hear him out being a new artist and he’s very confident as a music lover you’ll be pleased. Gaining national attention with his hit single “She Bad” featuring southern rap legend Bun B. Bertell appreciates the positions he’s in and the company he keeps to make him a future artist of R&B. Picking a record label as a new artist can be a hit or a miss, but with proper research with a team to guide you in the right direction, nothing can go wrong.
What He Brings To Table: I try to keep it like 90’s R&B and when people hear it, it reflects on who I am as a person. The music is who I am as a person and it shows who Bertell is to the game. It has been a lot of growth in my music and now I’m in a position to let the world hear my music.
Was Signing With Capitol Best Option: I sat down and talked with many record labels. Shout out to Def Jam as I talked with Lenny S. Shout out to Lenny S. as he really was trying to sign me to Def Jam. Capitol at the time when I signed the only R&B artist they had over there was J. Holiday. J. Holiday and them are cool too, that’s my people. Atlantic Records you know they have Trey Songz and Ray Levender, as we talked with them too. Capitol just felt like I had a marketable name and gave me room. When you sign with a label the thing is to have them focus on you and not have people all scattered throughout the building.
The Gamble To Picking the Right Label: When I made the decision to sign to Capitol me and my partners just felt they had the right vision. We even sat with Universal as well. Anybody that is going to let me do me when it comes to my music, I appreciate that. When you sit with people and they say “I want you to do you, the swagger is there, the music is great”, it was a good thing. It was a no-brainer to sign with Capitol because they believe in what I can do on the creative side. I think Capitol was a good move and we are going to have a big year too man. They saw that Bertell is a machine and that I’m willing to work.
Why He’s Not A Gimmick: It don’t last, its a quick high, a quick thrill. Think about your biggest artist, what was the gimmick on Marvin Gaye, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder? A gimmick might get you that get thrill, but it don’t really last. That’s what I respect about those artist as you get the real deal. I think Jay-Z just proved there is no recession on music. There is no quality music coming out and you just can’t put out one song then expect fans to go buy it.
She Bad Single: I was in the studio and B-Cox was like “Yo you need a club-banging record”. We had this record called “So Fly” that Fat Joe was trying to buy from me. Actually Fat Joe was one of the first people to sign me as he tried to sign me to Terror Squad. I just felt like I needed a record to talk about women and I came up with “She Bad” as my boy T.A. Came up with the track. When I went home to a funeral I ran into Bun B and he was like “Yo whatever you need I got you”. I was just appreciative man and we got the video out right now.
The Chemistry with Brian Michael Cox: The chemistry with B-Cox is crazy man. Normally what he would do is knock out the beat and leave me in the studio. I don’t usually work with engineers so I just would record myself. He do his part, I do mine, and then we come together at the end and touch everything up.
Why Give Bertell A Chance: Its not even about me, its about good music. Give the music a chance and see if you like it.
